Shifting Views (Posters)

Shifting Views raises awareness about the barriers that people with disabilities face in education and daily life. Through a series of disability awareness posters, the campaign highlights how environmental, informational, and attitudinal obstacles, rather than individual differences, limit access and inclusion, and underscores the importance of accessibility and inclusive design in Bhutan’s TVET system.

Removing Barriers

People with disabilities are often limited by societal barriers, not their impairments. Removing physical, communication, and attitudinal barriers enables fuller participation in education, work, and community life.

Difficulty Communicating

When people with communication challenges face listeners who rely only on verbal speech, the barrier is not their ability but impatience and the lack of alternative ways to communicate.

Difficulty Concentrating and Understanding

When learners with difficulty concentrating or understanding are given only printed textbooks, the barrier is not their ability but the format. Relying solely on textbooks, rather than offering alternatives like audio or video, creates a barrier.

Invisible Disabilities

Disability is not always visible. Over ¾ of disabilities are invisible, including challenges with learning, communication, hearing, mental health, or medical conditions. While unseen, these disabilities still create real barriers, reminding us to listen, not judge, and recognize each person’s unique strengths and needs.

Difficulty Hearing

When a deaf learner encounters a classroom without a Sign Language Interpreter, the barrier is not deafness but the lack of accessible communication.

What Accessibility Really Is

Accessibility goes beyond ramps and elevators. It means designing information, environments, and services so everyone, including people with visible and invisible disabilities, can participate equally. By planning with diverse needs in mind from the start, accessibility creates better, more inclusive experiences for everyone.

Difficulty Managing Emotions/Mental Health

When learners with mental health challenges encounter schools without counselling or support, the barrier is not their condition but the lack of services and the stigma surrounding mental health.

Difficulty Seeing

When people with low vision or blindness are given only printed documents, the barrier is not their vision but the lack of accessible formats like digital or audio.

Difficulty Walking

When a wheelchair user encounters stairs, the barrier is not the wheelchair but the stairs. The wheelchair is a valid means of mobility, and the stairs are the problem.
